Wiki In Action

On a similar note to my Blogs In Action post, I have been collecting a list of wiki sites that I also used as public references when talking to clients about possible use case scenarios:

The New Orleans wiki is a good example for public sector organizations. But it could also be used (in terms of style, structure) for any structured community effort.

The Wikiversity wiki is a good example for learning/educational strategists.

The MSWiki is a good example for IT organizations that might want to use a wiki to aggregate and maintain information on products.

There are a few wikis out there that are designed in terms of style and structure to keep people up to date on health-related topics. While clearly relevant to strategists in the public sector, this type of wiki approach would be appropriate in a variety of situations:

WikiBirdFlu, WikiCancer, FluWiki, Dr. Coop

The eyeforpharma wiki is a reference for the pharmaceuitical industry.

The RHIO wiki (Regional Health Information Organizations) is a wiki created by the Center for Health Transformation, CHIME and eHealth Initiative. The wiki acts as a real-time clearinghouse of ideas, information and solutions for those working with health information exchanges.

The CFD wiki is a community project to improve knowledge about a collection of topics.

YelloWikis is a business listing -- organizations have tons of lists so many different types of applications using this style/structure.

These two wiki sites are examples relevant to community-of-practice efforts: WaterWiki, Taxocop (Taxonomy CoP)

Wikitravel (general) and Archi-Tourist (those interested in architecture) are examples of community-maintained travel guides.

Microsoft leverages a Wiki to gather feedback for its Xbox product at wikiXBOX360 is a community site for fans of Microsoft's product. My assumption is that Microsoft monitors the site and absorbs the feedback but there is no official link apparent.

WikiMusicGuide is self-explanatory but the point that seems to repeat often is use of Wikis to refine information collective insight.

And of course, no list of examples would be complete without MuppetWiki.

Are you sure it's Microsoft leveraging a wiki in the wikiXBOX360 example? I thought this was just a fan-created site. I'm collecting examples of external wikis by large IT companies at http://wikiangela.com/wiki/Who_has_wikis so it would be helpful to know whether that one is really a Microsoft-approved/sponsored site.

Hello Mike - I could have done with you at the Gilbane event last week when I was a judge (Simon) for Wiki Idol.

I'm afraid I was rather dismissive of the Wiki vendors - I don't think they like me now...

Best
Alan

Hey Alan, nice to hear from you. The vendors will get over it ... some would argue - wiki, blog, etc - if you know the metamodel, schema, data, etc it's all just a database with views
