Open Source Unified Communications
In addition to my recent post on Jabber, there has been a series of announcements which illustrate how an open source alternative is taking shape to counter market moves by traditional vendors (e.g., Avaya, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft).

Intel Stakes Fonality
Intel Stakes Fonality
By Sean Wolfe - Red HerringFebruary 07, 2007
Intel Capital on Wednesday announced a bet in the ongoing Internet telephony battle.
The chip maker led a $7 million third round of financing for Los Angeles-based Fonality, a company that makes Internet phone systems for small businesses. Previous investor Azure Capital Partners also participated in the round, which brings the firm's total funding to $12.5 million.

Gizmo Call Launches, Browser-based VoIP
VoIP company SIPphone is at DEMO today, where it is launching Gizmo Call - an online service that makes VoIP phone calls possible from any web browser. It works via a Flash plugin, which enables users to make calls simply by typing a phone number into a text-field in a browser. Users can also use URLs like http://gizmocall.com/18005551212 (that link is an example only and will not work). Gizmo Call is separate from SIPphone's other app, The Gizmo Project, which is a download VoIP app like Skype.

Digium's Leadership Change A Familiar Path
The shuffling of leadership roles at Digium can be attributed to the company's – and its venture investor's – desire to rapidly grow into a industry powerhouse. Digium is already in the process of putting up a building able to support up to 200 employees, with options to construct two others. In December, the company had nearly 100 people on payroll.
Enterprise buyers and Wall Street investors will both likely find comfort in Windham's appointment as CEO. If the company continues to follow the pattern of venture money-fast growth-professional management, one of the steps in the next 18 to 30 months could be an IPO.
